Year in Review: 2024

Looking back at 2024, it’s hard not to see the reality of what we experienced:

  • A renewed opioid crisis public health emergency nationwide in June 2024.
  • A historic election that left many families divided—so much that a Time Magazine essay called it an estrangement epidemic—with 1 in 2 adults being estranged from a close relative. “While the primary cause of these rifts is often tied to something a relative said or did, 1 in 5 directly cite political differences as the reason.”
  • A fentanyl drug threat that has entered record-high levels of seizures according to the DEA. Reporting that, “the shift from plant-based drugs, like heroin and cocaine, to synthetic, chemical-based drugs, like fentanyl and methamphetamine, has resulted in the most dangerous and deadly drug crisis the United States has ever faced.”
  • The cost of living has noticeably increased, from homes going up to rising interest rates, and even the price of groceries, which have risen 28% since 2019, which puts more strain on individuals and communities
  • Intense storms, fires, and rising concerns about the future can make people feel like they’re living in a dystopian novel right before the end of civilization

Even though the facts can be harsh and we can feel them deeply around us: we are resilient. At Touchstone, we have a shared journey and are resolute in our commitment to being there for our community. In 2024, with a little help from our friends, we celebrated sobriety and good company:

The Zachary Horton Foundation Golf Tournament.

This Foundation aims to break the stigma of addiction by offering love, hope and acceptance to individuals and families suffering from this disease. Touchstone Recovery supports this mission by sponsoring their annual Breaking the Stigma Golf Tournament.

The Jonah & Travis Drug Awareness Fund Dinner.

Both Jonah and Travis passed away from an accidental Fentanyl poisoning. Established in dedication to prevent more fentanyl related deaths, this non-profit organization based in Visalia, California was established. They provide support and education to all those affected by addiction: those who battle it, their families, their friends, and the wider community.

PRIDE Visalia.

Organized by The Source, PRIDE Visalia is a grassroots, family-friendly celebration of diversity, inclusion, and acceptance, not only for LGBTQ+ people but also for LGBTQ+ allies. Food trucks, vendors, exhibits, entertainment, a Kid’s Zone, and education all come together to create an annual celebration where our community can feel at home in a judgment-free environment.

Fresno & Clovis Recovery Summit.

The Fresno and Clovis Recovery Summit is held during National Recovery Month. It is a free event promoting addiction awareness and support. Local leaders and speakers share inspiration and welcome anyone passionate about recovery or supporting those in recovery.

Partnership with Cuesta College and Fresno City College.

This past year, Touchstone Recovery Center cultivated a partnership with the two colleges to develop an internship program for students. With this growth we can help more people.

As we close out the year, we find deep comfort in celebrating what we can accomplish locally, our chosen friends and family who hold us accountable, and a community we have built to keep us on the path to live how we deserve.
