Are you enabling a loved one?
ENABLING BEHAVIOR
- Ignoring the problem or making excuses for the addict's behavior.
- Bailing the addict out of legal or financial troubles caused by their addiction.
- Continuously lending the addict money or providing shelter and food, even when they show no effort to seek help.
- Covering up for the addict, lying to friends or family members about their addiction or whereabouts.
- Drinking or using drugs with the addicted family member, even if it's just to "keep them company."
NON-ENABLING BEHAVIOR
- Encouraging the addict to seek professional help, such as therapy or rehab.
- Setting clear boundaries and sticking to them, such as not lending them money or allowing them to stay in the house while they are using drugs or alcohol.
- Refusing to be a part of any activity that promotes or enables the addict's behavior.
- Offering support and understanding, but not attempting to solve all their problems or make excuses for their actions.
- Educating oneself about addiction and recovery, to better understand the problem and to find ways to offer effective support.
